How to fix bufferbloat

Bufferbloat is excessive queueing delay when a connection is busy. Your idle ping can look excellent while loaded ping becomes terrible.

The key symptom is latency that rises sharply only when the line is busy.

Compare RaceMyNet on an idle connection with a test while another device is uploading or downloading heavily. Large latency increases under load point toward queue management rather than a lack of headline Mbps.

Uploads are often the trigger

Saturating upstream capacity can create long queues and make gaming or calls feel delayed even on a fast download plan.

Use SQM when supported

Routers with Smart Queue Management such as CAKE or fq_codel can control queues more intelligently than simple priority rules.

Leave bandwidth headroom

Traffic shaping is often set slightly below the real line rate so the router, rather than the modem or ISP queue, controls congestion.

Basic QoS is not always SQM

Traditional device priority can help some traffic but may not control queue delay as effectively as modern active queue management.

Test wired first

Wi-Fi adds its own variable latency, so diagnose loaded-line latency over Ethernet where possible.

Upgrade only with evidence

A newer router can help if the existing hardware cannot shape at your connection speed, but confirm the loaded-latency problem before buying equipment.
