Performance, not guesswork

Should IPv6 be on or off for gaming?

For a correctly configured network, IPv6 should generally be left enabled. Turning it off is a troubleshooting comparison, not a universal gaming optimisation.

IPV6 GAMING GUIDE

Do not disable a modern network protocol just because a generic tweak guide says so.

Games and platforms can use IPv4, IPv6 or both. If one protocol path is broken, comparing behaviour can help identify it, but permanent disabling should follow evidence rather than guesswork.

Leave IPv6 enabled by default

Modern Windows and many networks are designed to operate with IPv6 available. Disabling it can create unexpected problems for software that expects dual-stack networking.

Use a temporary comparison

If a specific game fails only on one connection, temporarily comparing with IPv6 disabled can help identify a broken IPv6 path.

Do not expect an FPS or bandwidth boost

IPv6 is an addressing and routing protocol. Turning it off does not inherently make a PC render faster or increase your broadband package speed.

Check the router and ISP

Broken or partial IPv6 configuration can come from the router or provider rather than Windows.

Measure the actual symptom

Compare ping, packet loss and connection success before and after any protocol change.

Re-enable after diagnosis

If disabling IPv6 makes no repeatable difference, return to the default dual-stack setup rather than leaving a workaround in place.
