Investigate LoL ping spikes and disconnects with in-match readings and Riot's network-log tools.
Find out what is actually lagging
Compare the ping and FPS displays when a champion responds late. Stable FPS with a latency spike suggests a different investigation from a frame-rate collapse. If the whole team sees the same incident, record the match and time for Riot rather than changing every local setting mid-game.
High ping or jitter
Actions arrive late, or delay fluctuates. Compare the in-game latency reading with your usual baseline.
Packet loss
Updates may be missing and movement can snap back. Look for a loss reading, not just a low average ping.
Low FPS or input delay
A choppy image or delayed controls can come from the device or display. Check an offline/local mode when available.
Settings worth checking in League of Legends
Menu names can change with patches, editions and platform. Use the controls available in your build; do not apply PC-only instructions to a console.
Ping and FPS display
Press Ctrl+F during a match using the default binding. If it was remapped, check the game's key bindings.
What it does: Shows latency and frame rate together, which helps distinguish connection delay from rendering.
Video settings
Open the in-game video settings and reduce visual load if FPS falls. Compare a frame-rate cap your computer can maintain.
What it does: This addresses local performance, not the route to Riot.
Account region
Check that you are playing on the intended account region. League does not offer a free per-match nearby-server switch like some shooters.
What it does: Do not buy a region transfer as the first troubleshooting step. Investigate sudden changes on your usual region first.
PC troubleshooting, step by step
- This section applies to the desktop game on Windows and macOS. Pause downloads and sync apps, then compare several sessions on Ethernet where possible.
- Use Riot's Connection Troubleshooting Log Reader after a troublesome match. Its official page explains how to find the match's network log on Windows or macOS and inspect latency, jitter and loss.
- Share logs only through the appropriate official support workflow, not a public forum. Include the match time, account region and whether the problem also affected other games.
Console support and fixes
- The desktop League of Legends game has no native PlayStation or Xbox version. There are no console LoL networking settings to recommend.
- Wild Rift is a separate game with different platform support and menus. Do not use desktop League file paths or keyboard instructions for Wild Rift.
A controlled checklist for ping spikes and loss
- Record a baseline. Note your game mode, platform, time, connection type and the in-game reading. Run RaceMyNet outside a match. Keep two or three results rather than relying on one unusually good test.
- Remove local wireless uncertainty. Compare Ethernet directly to the main router where possible. A cable into a wireless mesh satellite may still use a wireless backhaul. If Ethernet is unavailable, compare close to the main router.
- Pause heavy traffic. Stop downloads, cloud backups and livestream uploads across the household for one comparison. If lag disappears only when traffic stops, investigate congestion and your router's supported queue-management options.
- Check the simple physical causes. Reseat Ethernet plugs, try a known-good cable or another router port, and restart network equipment once using its manufacturer's instructions. Do not factory-reset it as the first step.
- Change one thing and retest. Compare similar matches at your normal playing time. Keep improvements that repeat. A faster DNS service, a VPN or more Mbps is not a guaranteed reduction in game-server ping.
Prefer the game's own loss display for game traffic. If RaceMyNet reports an HTTPS fallback, request failures are not a direct measurement of the game's UDP packet loss.
If League of Legends still has connection problems
- If a practice session feels smooth but an online match does not, retain the ping/FPS observations rather than assuming every online issue is bandwidth.
- For recurring disconnects, follow Riot's supported connection troubleshooting and collect match logs. Keep security software enabled and use application-specific exceptions only when an actual block is identified.
If several games and devices struggle on a wired connection, give your ISP the times, results and affected services. If only this game or mode is affected, start with the publisher's support and service information below. Include the platform, region, timestamps and a short clip of the indicators. Share diagnostic logs privately through official support.
Why do I have high LoL ping with fast broadband?
Your account region, distance, routing and congestion all matter independently of download speed. Compare the same region at different times, stop background uploads and use Riot's match logs to see whether latency or packet loss is changing.
Official guidance and further help
Menu instructions were checked against the publisher guidance below. General comparison steps are troubleshooting suggestions, not a promise of a particular ping or a guaranteed fix.
Use the test as a baseline. Verify the result in your game.
A browser test and a game match use different servers. Compare repeat measurements, in-game indicators and the same playing conditions before deciding whether a change helped.
